Walking Sydney in the Rain _Paddy’s Markets → Chinatown → Art Gallery of NSW
Today, I walked through Sydney on a rainy day, starting at Paddy’s Markets and Chinatown, then walking past the Art Gallery of NSW
The walk starts with the lively atmosphere of the market and Chinatown, continues through the quiet spaces of the art gallery, and finishes at The Rocks, where traces of old Sydney still remain.
Especially on a rainy day, you can see a different side of Sydney.
Take the L2 light rail from Central Station and getting off at Paddy’s Markets to start the walk
The first destination is Paddy’s Markets.
Located in Haymarket, Paddy’s Markets is right next to Chinatown, making it easy to visit both places together. The official information also introduces the Haymarket market as a traditional market where you can find a variety of clothing, accessories, souvenirs, and everyday goods.
When you enter the market, the first thing you notice is the movement of people.
There are many tourists as well as local people.
The shops are filled with goods, and as you slowly look around the small stores one by one, you naturally end up spending more time walking.
The Street Leading to Chinatown
After leaving Paddy’s Markets and walking toward Chinatown, the atmosphere starts to change.
Narrow streets, restaurants, and Chinese signs begin to appear.
Especially on a rainy day, the signs and lights reflected on the wet streets make the of the city feel more vivid than usual.
The Moment the City’s Atmosphere Changes
As you continue walking through Chinatown toward the city centre, the scenery gradually begins to change.
Streets filled with markets and restaurants give way to modern buildings and wider roads, then quiet parks and green spaces begin to appear again.
This change was one of the most interesting parts of the walk.
Without using any special transportation, you can experience the changing atmosphere of the city simply by walking on your own two feet.
Art Gallery of NSW
The next destination is the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Located in The Domain, the Art Gallery of NSW is one of Sydney’s well-known places to enjoy art. According to the official Gallery Shop information, the gallery is open every day, general admission is free, and it stays open later on Wednesdays.
Rather than thinking of the art gallery simply as another tourist destination, it is much more relaxing to think of it as a place to take a break while walking.
Back on the Streets and Heading Towards Circular Quay Station
After leaving the art gallery, I continue walking.
The destination is Circular Quay Station.
Along the way, it is also nice to stop for a moment and look at Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge.
A Walk That Felt Even Better Because of the Rain
This walk was a little different from Sydney on a sunny day.
The rain can be a little inconvenient, but that inconvenience itself can become part of the memory of the journey.
I don’t think walking around Sydney is simply about checking famous places off a list.
At the market, you see everyday life,
in Chinatown, you experience food and culture,
at the art gallery, you encounter art.
This walk was a day when I could experience all of these different sides of Sydney in one journey.
